“How long will it take to get that software done in three months?”

I am amazed at how often I hear this question in one form or another. And when I it, I know that if not handled correctly, I will be subjected to numerous meetings that will serve little purpose. The right response is to proceed with caution!

First off, in response to this question, you should not give into the pressure and commit to an unrealistic deadline. Also, you should not attempt to explain why you can’t meet this schedule. The fact of the matter is that you are in a situation where the burden of proof is on you. And since you don’t know how long it will take, you won’t be in a position to explain why you can’t make the deadline. Also, don’t get frustrated and start ranting about the unfairness of the situation.

So, what do you do? First thing to realize is that many people involved will know that what is being asked for is unrealistic, so you’re not alone.  I find that the best thing to do is remain noncommittal and ask for time to figure out how long it will take. You will need time to figure out what the plan should be and start getting an idea of how long it will take. Once you have your information, you will be in a much better position to push back on what is being asked for or discuss the tradeoffs (features, quality, etc…) of such a deadline. I find that these things have a way of working themselves out.
